Room of the Week – muted grey living room
This living room, featured in the LivingEtc gallery, provides a well designed living room for relaxing and entertaining with the muted grey tones helping to create a beautiful room.
To create a comfortable relaxed area a large L shaped sofa is often used in living rooms, however the choice of a super luxe fabric has lifted this one to create a striking piece of furniture. The fabric used in the cushions has also added to the luxury feel.
Floating shelves in the alcoves provides a good contemporary solution when there is no need or desire to maximise the storage. It would have been a predictable choice to build shelving and cupboards from floor to ceiling in each alcove but if you have the luxury of not requiring the storage this solution is more elegant. Woodgate Design, based in London, can install bespoke shelving as pictured below – alternatively Ikea sell floating shelves that can be cut to size if you are looking for a cost-effective solution.
In a room decorated with predominantly one colour it is good to add some splashes of color to add interest, it also allows these items to be changed every season to keep your interior fresh. In this scheme tones of green and purple have been added to a base palate of grey. Colourful cubes are a good way to add colour cheaply and also allow you to be brave with colour if you are naturally conservative. A cube of 45cm square can be made for around £100, Highly Sprung in London have a good service and will make it in any fabric you want.
A classical element is added to this room with a traditional stone fireplace which will provide all year interest even when you don’t have a fire lit. You can choose to add a contemporary modern gas effect fire, or use traditional coals and logs. Chesney’s in London and New York has a great selection of fireplaces and surrounds.
By using a muted palate and adding a classical element with a couple of splashes of colour a room has been created that will provide a lovely relaxing space to enjoy.

Gray is one of my favorite colors and I love that room!
I love Grey for a room. It has a relaxing feel to it. I especially love the feature above the fireplace!
