Young & Norgate – furniture makers to watch
I first discovered Young & Norgate in the depths of the House of Detention at this years Clerkenwell Design Week. Situated underground in a former prison their furniture shone out from the darkness as one of my discoveries of the year.
Established in 2010 by David Young and Ross Newgate the company is a small group of designers and craftsmen based on the south coast of Devon. Stating that they ‘make’ not ‘manufacture’ furniture the care and attention they put into their work is immediately obvious. They believe that good design should stand the test of time so aim to deliver quality well-made furniture that is unique, elegant and timeless. Each piece is hand crafted in their workshop using time-honoured techniques that are not seen in the mass market.
Young & Norgate launched their initial collection with a small number of pieces featuring pared back design that leaves the beauty of the furniture to speak for itself. The Animate Writing Desk shown below is made from American Black Walnut. Limited to a number of 100 pieces for each item the furniture is made to order. The bespoke nature of their range allows the customer to decide on the timber used and the finishes applied to their furniture. If you want your drawers lined with scarlet red leather these guys will do it for you!
Other products in the current range include the Zimmer sideboard shown below. This piece is timeless and would be a great addition to any living or dining space. The frame is made in American Black Walnut and the doors are available in five standard Formica colours – although it can also be customised. They recently made a Zimmer sideboard with Bronzed brushed aluminium fronts for The Living Room exhibition.
After the showing at Clerkenwell Design Week to trade visitors I was pleased to see them again at 100% Design in September. The show allowed them to reach a larger market and hopefully they are on their way to receiving the recognition they deserve. The Wellington Chair (shown below with a furry friend!) is another beautifully crafted product.
In addition to the current collection they will also take on any commission large or small – in their words from umbrella stands to custom-made libraries . If you are looking for a furniture maker and you want someone who believes in the true values of craftsmanship and building things to last – think Young & Norgate.
PS They do skateboards too
