The Sleep Event
Next week sees the return of The Sleep Event to the Business Design Centre in Islington on 23rd and 24th November. The exhibition is one of the premier events of the year for hotel design. This is where innovation meets high end design, and over 150 manufacturers will show the latest in products and services for the hotel industry.
As designing and specifying the bathroom is such a major part of hotel design there will inevtiably be a large number of bathroom suppliers at the show. An old friend of mine Laufen will be adding some Swissness to the event. It will be interesting to see if any of their new products are better than my current favourite Palomba range.
Lighting is another essential aspect of hotel design that has to be right. It is important when designing a hotel room to cater for the wide variety of guests that may use it. Leisure travellers will focus on the mood lighting, but for a business traveller the task lighting will be very important if they have to work in the room. Baulmann Leuchten from Germany will be exhibiting at the show. Their lighting is featured at the Berlin Movenpick Hotel – it is one colourful hotel!
Designing the environment of a hotel room brings very different challenges compared to the design of a residential environment. The fabric and furnishings in particular are one aspect where durability is key. Zinc Textile is part of Romo who will be exhibiting at the show. Their new range Labyrinth features three different fabrics in a number of colourways.
If you would like to visit Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan next year you should take part in the Made in Italy event. Described as ‘speed dating for bathrooms’ you need to meet with 5 different Italian manufacturers on the afternoon of 24th for a chance to win. There are 17 specialist manufacturers taking part in the Made in Italy event including Arlex Italia, Jacuzzi Europe and Teuco. The winners of the trip will be announced at evening cocktails – I need to register for the speed dating!
The show also features a Conference and the night before the show starts the European Hotel Design Awards will be presented. The Sleepotel will also be a show highlight, it showcases the vision of leading architects and interior designers for the hotel of the future. I’m looking forward to the show, watch this space for my review and new discoveries after I have visited.
