Room of the Week – calm hallway

March 23, 2011

This weeks Room of the Week is a calm neutral hallway with touches of Spring flowers.  From the House to Home galleries this room is the perfect interior to make any visitor feel very welcome.

A welcoming hallway is so essential to a home but design and decoration is often overlooked for this room and invariably it often becomes a dumping ground or just a space you pass through.  If this is a problem in your home read my advice on how to clear the clutter from your hallway.

A calm neutral colour is a good choice for a hallway to ensure that when you return home after a busy day you are not hit with a riot of colour.  I have used Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone in several hallways for clients.  It is a good neutral colour with an element of warmth that creates the ‘welcome home’ feel desired for hallways.

Hanging lanterns are a good choice for large hallways, and by choosing the correct finish they work well in either a contemporary or a traditional interior.  The lantern below is from Christopher Wray and the chrome finish would be perfect if your home has a modern contemporary style.  The same lantern in brass however would be perfect if you have a traditionally styled interior.

It is nice to add a feature clock in your hallway, especially if you are always running to get somewhere on time.  The clock in the main picture is traditionally styled but works well in the eclectic mix of this interior, the gentle ticking also offers a calming sound through your home.  Alternatively to add some fun into your interior the clock below from Diamantini & Domenic available from Heals, it cuckoos on the hour, is available in 3 colours but importantly does not make any noise at night!

By combining a few simple elements it is easy to ensure your hallway welcomes people to your home, remember it’s the first place visitors see when they arrive.  Also as our homes generally become smaller we must make the most of all the space in your home so give your hallway the attention it deserves.
