Room of the week – Monochrome dining room

August 17, 2011

This weeks Room of the Week is a dining room decorated in a monochrome style.  The room from the House to Home galleries combines stripes, textures and finishes to add layers to the decorating scheme of the room.

Using a monochrome colour scheme for a room creates a very calming room, perfect for summer dining.  It is also very good if you have a casual lifestyle and want a relaxed room to use on a daily basis.

Using stripes in your curtain fabric will help to accentuate the height of a room.  Zoffany manufacture a lovely fabric called Doric Stripes shown below that would be ideal for curtains in your interior, or can also be used on upholstery.  It is also available with more colour in one of the stripes if you want to add one single aspect of colour to your monochrome interior.

Adding a feature light above your dining room helps to define the dining space and also will help to set the mood when you use the table, especially with a dimmer fitted.  The Carousel chandelier from Franklite below would be a good choice for a modern interior.  It is available with the burgundy shades shown here or a black shade, this would be ideal if you are building a monochrome scheme.  The burgundy shades shown would alternatively work very well if you wanted to add a splash of colour to a plain room.

If you have the luxury of space in your dining room and don’t require additional storage a smart console table provides additional furniture without crowding the room.  The Louis console table below is designed by John Reeves and available in Heals.  The black lacquer finish on the legs is very on trend, but it is mixed a traditional turn leg that has appeared to have been sliced in four to create the legs.

Creating a monochrome scheme that works well isn’t just a case of buying everything in black, white or grey shades.  To achieve a successful mix ensure that you add different textures and finishes into the room, it is these elements that will add layers of interest and ensure the decoration of the room is a success.
