Room of the Week – modern toile bedroom

August 9, 2012

This weeks Room of the Week is a colourful bedroom featuring toile wallpaper. From the House to Home galleries this bedroom has a riot of colour that creates a very interesting and lively bedroom.

Toile style wallpaper has returned to fashion recently and there are now many great variations available. Originating from late 18th century France the style is correctly known as ‘Toile de Juoy’ and usually depicts a scene repeated on a plain background.

London Toile by Timerous Beasties is a favourite of mine. I love the contemporary take on this style of wallpaper which includes sights of modern-day London. You can spot traditional landmarks such as St Paul’s and Tower Bridge plus newcomer the Gerkin. The paper is available with a red, green or blue print on a cream background. The company also produce a Glasgow Toile.

Another great version of Toile with an even more modern take is the City wallpaper by Albany. Available through Wallpaper Direct this paper shows New York, London and Paris landmarks with local ‘catchphrases’! It is also available with a grey background and yellow highlights – very on trend.

If your style is more traditional there is a very wide choice of wallpaper and fabric to choose from. I recently used Fox Hunting from Sanderson for a study in a very traditional home. We combine the paper with a neutral paint colour and then used an accent colour to add further interest to the room.

Toile de Juoy can make a lovely additional to any home, whatever your style. It is a great accent wallpaper if you home is very neutral, use it in the smallest room if you are unsure of the look. Alternatively you can go full on like this bedroom and a create a show stopping look.
