Room of the Week – modern four poster bedroom

September 5, 2012

This weeks Room of the Week is a modern four poster bedroom. From the House to Home galleries this bedroom shows that a four poster bed can easily be used in a modern room setting to create a stunning look.

This room uses a smoke and damson palette to compliment the dramatic effect of the four poster bed. The history of this style of bed goes back many years and it is often thought of as a luxury item. The decorating style associated with the bed is usually traditional but it can easily be added to a contemporary home with the correct styling.

If you are dressing a four poster bed the fabrics used to dress it are very important, if you can use rich indulgent fabrics and include different layers. The Sargasso range from Osborne and Little is available in wider width fabrics. It is therefore perfect for using as a background on a bed without the need to join the fabric. From that range the Catalina fabric below is a rich ivory and silver damask, this style helps to create a very relaxing bedroom environment.

If you prefer the less formal look but still want a four poster bed the Pavilion bed from Crate & Barrel would be a good choice. Manufactured in mahogany and veneers, a black lacquer stain is applied to finish the furniture. This bed gives you the grand four poster look without the need to dress it – the classic proportions of this bed will stand on their own.

Whatever style you choose for your bed, one of the most important elements to get right in any bedroom is the bed linen. I am a huge fan of plain white linen, it allows you to easily change the bed style when needed. The White Company do some of the best linen available, their Pimlico bed linen collection has a massive 720 thread count. This is some of the softest linen you can find anywhere to create the ultimate sleeping experience!
