Room of the Week

July 31, 2013

This week we’ve chosen a simply styled living room as our Room of the Week. Featuring a pared down decoration scheme the interest is added through the use of rich colour on the sofa and also the pattern on the other decorating accessories.

This simple style of decorating is very Scandinavian in its nature. The walls here feature wood panelling which complement the colour of the wooden floors. This neutral colour scheme then allows you to add furniture and decorating accessories in any colour. It is also a good scheme if you’d like to be able to update your interior easily without redecoration.

Adding a signature piece to your interior in a bright colour is a bold choice but the results can be so successful if done well. From the Snowdrop in colour ‘sunshine’ would certainly bring a smile to your home. This fabric is a matt velvet which works very well in a contemporary interior. I would combine this simple sofa with pattern on other items, maybe the rug as shown above, to create layers in the interior.

Wood panelling is a simple styling choice and can add warmth to a room by the inclusion of texture. If you don’t want to install proper panelling, faux wood wallpaper has developed over the last few years. A very high-end version is available from Piet Hein Eek, it is beautiful but very expensive at nearly £200 a roll. If you are looking for a more cost-effective version try the Fashion range by Albany – available through Wallpaper Direct. For just £15 a roll in several colourways it’s a great way to add this effect to your interior.

This room was originally featured in the extensive galleries of House to Home. Take a look over at their website for room inspiration, and be sure to check back here every week to find which one of the rooms has been showcased.

For the cushions take a look at Graham & Green, they have a good selection of colourful cushions. For the rug I would suggest Designers Guild, they have similar styles to this in their current range. Great choice buying the wallpaper – hope the room comes together!
