Design Classic – Fritz Hansen Series 7 chair

August 1, 2013

As August starts today it is time to add another Design Classic to our monthly feature. This month we are featuring the Series 7 chair designed by Arne Jacobson for Fritz Hansen. Widely recognised as one of the most popular chairs ever designed, its place in our series is well deserved.

The collaboration between Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen is one of the most successful ever between a designer and manufacturer, The Series 7 chair was designed in 1955 by which time Jacobsen had been working with Fritz Hansen for over 20 years. Manufactured in a pressure moulded veneer it uses a technique pioneered in the 1920s by the grandson of Fritz Hansen. The chair is now available in 9 different types of wood and a variety of colour lacquer finishes.

The Series 7 chair has been often copied but the quality of an original shines through. The original stackable version is my personal favourite but there are many options now available. You can have it as a bar chair option, with castors, with arms – they even produce a baby version. If you want a good well designed chair you really can’t go wrong with a Series 7.
