Design Classic – Robin Day 675 chair

September 4, 2013

After a long August holiday I’m back blogging and we are today introducing our Design Classic for September. This month we are featuring the 675 chair designed by Robin Day. Designed over 60 years ago this chair is still specified around the world so it thoroughly deserves its place in our design hall of fame.

Robin Day 675

Robin Day was an English designer who became very well-known during the Festival of Britain held in 1951. Although known primarily for his furniture designs his repertoire actually spanned many disciplines – he also worked in flooring design, interior design, graphic design and also on the interiors of passenger aircraft. For the Festival of Britain he designed seating which is still in place today in the Royal Festival Hall.

Day is best known for his use of injection moulded polypropylene in the production of chairs, one of his designs has had over 20 million units produced. He was a pioneer in this way of production and his designs were the first to see the method fully utilised. His work with polypropylene allowed him to go on to produce the 675 which features a one-piece moulded plywood chair with integrated armrests.

The 675 chair was designed in 1952 after his success at the Festival of Britain. The chair combines the 3 elements of wood, steel and leather to create a chair that is suitable for many interiors. I have often seen this chair used in an office interior but it would be equally at home in a smart dining room. If you combined it with a sleek white veneer dining table it would give a very eclectic look to your room. Design Classics like the 765 chair won’t go out of fashion and will enhance your interior as they gently age.

Simple, yet elegant the 675 chair is available with either an oak or walnut finish, I’m sure it will be specified and enjoyed for many years to come!

While we are entering this chair into our Design Classic series this post is also my entry into Case Furniture Contemporary Blogging Competition. Find out more at and discover their extensive range of furniture.

Hi Andrew. Thanks for entering this post – the 675 chair is a great choice. Robin Day was a great designer and it’s so good that his designs are still popular today.
