A weekend break at Lower Mill Estate
As much as I love London life it is nice to be able to escape the urban landscape once in a while and head to the country. Finding somewhere nice to stay however can often be a problem, my Interior Designer genes take over and I want someone modern and contemporary to rest my head. I sometimes wonder if country contemporary exists as a style?
Thankfully in the middle of the Cotswolds you can now head to Lower Mill Estate for a holiday in well designed modern apartments, and maybe even buy your own home there. Designed with every modern day convenience I was lucky enough to spend a weekend there recently as a guest of the estate and loved it!
Lower Mill Estate was formed around 16 years ago by the Paxton family and comprises of 550 acres of prime Cotwsold landscape around large lakes to the south of Circenster. The vision of the family to create “a residential nature reserve that provides a sense of security and the freedom to escape the demands of urban life”. They’ve certainly succeeded as once you’ve turned off the main roads and entered the Estate you are greeted with a feeling of complete calm. The pressure of London life disappeared and I was ready for the weekend to start!
The properties on the Estate are based around a number of lakes, so if watersports are your things this is the ideal place – jump off your deck into the canoe and offer you go exploring. Around these lakes there are also miles of footpaths to explore the area, which includes a huge nature reserve. The whole Estate felt very safe for children to head off exploring and discovering – one of the lakes even includes otters, recently reintroduced to the Estate by the Paxton family.
Through Habitat Escapes you can rent a wide variety of homes in Lower Mill Estate. We stayed in a beautiful two bedroom apartment that has recently been added to their portfolio of properties. Overlooking one of the lakes you are greeted with the serene view above from the large terrace and you instantly know you’ve found somewhere to relax. After a Friday afternoon drive from London we had a couple of drinks and some snacks on the terrace and were ready to explore our home for the weekend.
Inside the apartment has been well designed and features many contemporary features. The two bedrooms both have striking feature walls in a graphic contemporary print – I felt at home instantly. The accent colour of bright yellow really creates warm welcoming rooms – as do the hints of hot pink! Both bedrooms have their own ensuite facilities, this is really good if you are sharing the apartment with friends and both want some private space. The living area features large bifold doors that open to give access to the large terrace. On a summer day with the doors open you can really enjoy outdoor living – they even provide a BBQ for your use. Back inside the kitchen is fully equipped with the latest appliances – including the all important dishwasher, no-one wants to wash up while on holiday.
Lower Mill Estate really is a destination resort, once you are there you can kick back and enjoy everything the 550 acre estate has to offer. The onsite Spa is a great place to relax, it features an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a gym and also offers a full range of treatments. There is also a coffee shop, which stocks a small range of groceries which is perfect if the thought of leaving the Estate is too much. Sadly there isn’t currently a restaurant onsite but that is due to change soon – in the meantime if you want to venture out for food head out to The Potting Shed in Crudwell, a superb pub we found.
Take a look at the Lower Mill Estate website to discover more about the facility and then book your own visit. It really is the perfect place to escape from urban life, I can’t wait to book a return visit – and explore the Estate more! Maybe next time I’ll get to see those otters.
