Room of the Week

May 26, 2014

With a bank holiday Monday in the UK today and the promise of good weather I thought it was a good time to take the Room of the Week outside into the garden. After a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show last week I’m inspired to be outside in my own garden and get it ready for the warmer summer months. This outdoor space features good furniture, well designed lighting and smart decorative accessories – it shows that with a bit of thought it is very easy to bring your inside style outside.

A smart dining table is an essential purchase to allow you to enjoy dining outside. Whatever your size of outdoor space there is something to suit. Maybe a small bistro style table with two chairs is perfect for your terrace? Or do you have a custom built patio that’s crying out for a large table for family gatherings?

At the top end of the market Gloster manufacturers a wide selection of outdoor tables. I discovered their full range at Clerkenwell Design Week last week and was really impressed with the quality of their products. Although this furniture is expensive it will last forever and give you many years of enjoyment in your garden. They also have a great range of outdoor chaises and loungers with cushions that are totally weatherproof.

At the other end of the market Ikea produce the equally stylish Garpen range which can also be left outside at all times. The Garpen range includes tables, chairs and sectional sofas that can be use to create a large amount of outdoor seating. A table and 4 chairs costs a very reasonable £260 and will give many years of service.  With all exterior furniture though do remember that ideally you should bring all weather furniture inside over the winter.

With the table sorted you then just need a few decorative accessories and you are ready to enjoy dinner in the garden. A lantern is always a good choice and I also like to include items from inside that you bring outside when needed, it will give the space a more luxurious feel. Now all we need is some good weather …

This room was originally featured in the extensive galleries of House to Home. Take a look over at their website for room inspiration, and be sure to check back here every week to find which one of the rooms has been showcased.
